Neverending Market

This morning Will and I both woke up insanely early at like 5am. Neither of us knew why since we didn't go to bed particularly early but for some strange reason, we woke up wide awake. We goofed around and talked and giggled and it was the perfect example of why my husband is my best friend.

Moving on, we got our stuff packed up because we were checking out this morning. We weren't leaving Bangkok until 6pm this evening but after breakfast we left our luggage at the front desk and went about the last thing on our Bangkok to-do list: the Chatuchak Weekend Market. We took the subway to the stop where there is also Chatuchak Park (which is actually really pretty and had tons of people picnicing with friends).  And walked around.

This market was massive. I've been to a lot of markets in my day and this one was huge!  They even give you a map that breaks down all the sections and how the booths are organized. We ate lunch at another outdoor makeshift restaurant that I just love about Bangkok and it was of course delicious!  We also got a million snacks and desserts like normal and even bought some souvenirs. Normally I'm not into all the junk they sell at these markets but I got a fun tote bag/cinch sack, a top, and a dress. And of course, everything was so cheap!

After the market, we went back to our hotel to collect our bags.   We then took the subway to the Hua Lamphong train station where we'd be catching the overnight train to Chiang Mai. I knew there were showers at the station but had no clue how nice or gross they'd be. I've showered at the Paris du Gare station before and it was one of the biggest bathrooms I've ever seen and was surprised at how clean it was. Now that shower was about $10USD so I was very surprised that the Bangkok shower was only 10THB which is about $0.30 USD. Hahaha however unlike the Paris shower, it didn't come with a towel rental so we had to go to the mini mart and buy one for $3 USD. Still, it was a steal to get a shower in before going on the train and it was actually really decent. Not like a hotel shower but basically one you'd use at a gym locker room or something like that.

Anyways, it was time to bored our overnight train to Chiang Mai.  Chiang Mai is super far North, close to the border of Myanmar so it's going to be a long train ride.  It's going to be about 12 hours long but luckily, we'll be asleep for most it! We booked a first class cabin which had two berths so it was private for just Will and me. It also had a private sink although the car had a community "shower" (basically a hose over a hole- no idea how you take a shower in that tiny room while the car is moving) and a community toilet.  It was pretty standard and equivalent to any overnight train berth. However it was a little roomier than the one from Paris to Barcelona. Here's the pictures from before and after the beds were made up.

We both fell right to sleep though. We fell asleep right after the train left the station and was woken up by the attendant to allow him to come in and make-up the beds.  After he left, we got right in our beds and went back to sleep!  Ha!  It was nice and cold, surprisingly comfortable, and I think the motion made us fall right asleep. In the morning, we'll be in Chiang Mai!

Goodbye Bangkok!
Here are my favorites about you:
1.  You have excellent transportation options between the tuk tuks, taxis, sky trains, and metro. And they are all so cheap.
2.  I love your food. All of it. And so must your people because there is so much of it everywhere. It's so delicious and so cheap and I was perpetually full on this trip.
3.  You guys have serious devotion to your faith. I've never seen so many temples and observances of reference. I dig it.
4.  Your patriotism is pretty unreal. People comment that Americans love rocking our flag all the time (as we should in my opinion) but you guys have some serious reverence to your King with all the pictures and the anthem twice a day.
